... for a wee while, at least. After my "year off" (which has, in fact lasted for over two-and-a half years ) I've managed to negotiate a short-term contract position for three months with a subsea engineering company in Aberdeen and I've decided to go for it. After all this time, I can't quite believe that from Wednesday onwards I'll be getting up every weekday morning and going to work again! I'm quite looking forward to it as it's quite different from the type of work I was doing before I took my sabbatical and it will certainly be a challenge as it sounds as if it will be a very full-on position involving interfacing with lots of other people and companies and having two people reporting directly to me.
All my non-horsey friends think I'm mad, wanting to work during the summer, but I'm sure you all appreciate that it's much easier when the ponies are out 24/7 with no mucking out or rugging and minimum feeding. That's why I work as a contractor as I don't want a permanent job again which would mean that I had to get up in the dark on wintry mornings and drive for over an hour on untreated roads, etc. Anyway, even by the end of September, when my contract ends, there will still be enough daylight for me to ride in the evenings, even if I have to use the lights in the school, and my friend, who rides Alfie for me every week, says she will come out one evening instead so I'm sure I'll manage; after all it's what I did from 1996 to 2008.
I'm just having to do a bit of juggling, e.g. changing my next farrier's appointment from 11am to 6pm the next day so that I don't have to take any time off. The only problem will be showing on a Saturday but I'll only need to take a couple of half days before Echt and Tarland for pony bathing.
I'm going into Aberdeen on Monday to buy some working clothes e.g. black court shoes (I normally only wear jodhpurs, clogs, wellies and riding boots during the day).
Of course one of the main reasons I want to work for a wee bit again is the money - I can't lie! I have a list of pony-related things I've wanted for ages and it'll be nice to be in a position to buy more or less anything I want again.
I'm sure this time next week, I'll be saying, "Thank God its Friday". ;D
